Building Community with Intention
“Alone, we can do so little; together, we can do so much.” – Helen Keller
We are a communal species, social beings who live and work in groups. We need one another. My mom was great at building and sustaining community. She had lifelong friends that she organized and met with regularly, groups that satisfied the basic human need for connection. She had her church groups, her class reunion group, communities organized around her beliefs, projects, passions, and friendships.
We all need community.
The internet has done wonders for allowing us to find communities of people who see and support and champion us. But if you, like so many others, are craving in-person and face-to-face interaction with other human beings, an IRL community might be the thing you’re looking for. A quick google search will tell you about different groups and gatherings in your area. But what if you don’t find a community like the one you have in mind? Build it and they will come.
There are many different types of communities. Some are centered around an activity or hobby. Others are action-driven, in support of something or fighting against something. Some fill a societal need or exist to support a professional community. Others are gathered around circumstances, like grief support groups. If you feel called to gather a community together, here are some quick thoughts on how to make that happen:
Know your purpose. What are you passionate about? What do you believe in? What will be the guiding force of the group you’re connecting?
Hold space. Opening a door is half the battle. Send out flyers. Set out chairs. Let people know they’re welcome.
Know what your community is hungry for. What needs can be met with your group? How can your group serve its members?
Be consistent. It may take a while for a new project to gain momentum. Be patient.
