International Day of Women and Girls in Science
February 11th is the International Day of Women and Girls in Science, a day recognizing the vital importance of women and girls to the advancement of science and technology. This celebration is thanks to a 2015 resolution by the United Nations General Assembly. This year, the assembly revolves around the theme “Investment in Women and Girls in Science for Inclusive Green Growth”.
Here are some ways you can participate and celebrate women and girls in science:
Learn about and share the stories of incredible women like Flossie Wong-Staal, Mae C. Jemison, and Rebecca Lee Crumpler.
Read books written by women scientists. Joanne Manaster, a scientist herself, has compiled a wonderful list of science books written by women. Check it out and buy a book today!
Champion a woman in science. Share her story. Think of a woman in your life who has devoted her life to science. What is she working on? How can you amplify it?
Do a science experiment with a young woman in your life. There are some fun ideas here!
Thank a woman in science. Make a phone call. Send a note. Let her know you appreciate her work.
Lastly, marvel like a scientist. Life is incredible. The earth around is amazing. Stay curious today. Stay open to new ideas. Stay filled with wonder.
