TSMD November Newsletter - A Time of Thanksgiving
A Time of Thanksgiving
“What you remember saves you.”
― W. S. Merwin
In the Catholic tradition, November is all about remembrance—All Saints’ Day is on the first of the month, and All Souls Day on the second.
As the US approaches another grim milestone of nearly 700,000 people who have died of COVID-19, I’ve been thinking about remembering those who have gone before us.
How can we honor the loved ones we’ve lost, taking time to remember the impact they had on our lives? How can we recognize the loss on a national and global scale?
Remembrance is an essential part of healing. Consider lighting a candle in honor of the great many people who have died in the pandemic. If you remember someone you’ve lost personally, consider doing something they loved or enjoying their favorite food.
I hope this month brings healing and that you enjoy joyful celebrations later this month.

Q&A: Pushing the door open for women in medicine to advance
“Long before COVID-19 struck, AMA member Alexa B. Kimball, MD—a dermatologist, CEO and president of Harvard Medical Faculty Physicians at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center—worked to create a solid foundation for the organizations that she runs. She set the vision for these organizations and for those in management positions, making it possible to survive, and thrive, during the pandemic. Her leadership and insight have broken barriers for women in medicine, but her work is far from over.”
The Other Epidemic: Violence Against Healthcare Workers
“After working two busy evening hospital shifts, I was eating breakfast with my children when I started reading about physicians confronted and verbally abused during school board meetings for advocating for face masks in school. The pandemic changed course with the Delta variant increasing hospitalizations, and it seems to me the public response to physicians and healthcare workers also changed.”
What COVID Booster Shots Can and Can’t Do
“This week, I spoke with Céline Gounder about the conflicting information about booster doses of the vaccine… In the course of two conversations, which have been edited for length and clarity, we discussed which populations might benefit from a third shot, the best ways to prevent breakthrough infections, and the possible motives behind the Biden Administration’s approach to boosters.”
