Memorial Day Reflections
Each year in America on the last Monday in May, we honor and remember those who have died while serving in the military. On Memorial Day, we have the opportunity to commemorate and memorialize men and women who have lost their lives while serving their country.
This day is always important to me as a veteran, as the daughter of a veteran, and as an American. But this year, my work as a physician is also making me especially cognizant of the importance of today’s holiday.
There is even more poignancy in Memorial Day this year as we remember those who have died while protecting our lives and freedoms. All around the world, there is an ongoing war. The coronavirus is an enemy unlike the ones we are used to, but it is a battle we are waging nonetheless.
Today, I’m reflecting on what it means to serve others and trying to take to heart the lessons we can learn from those who are no longer with us today. There are lessons about bravery and sacrifice, courage, and selflessness. It’s a frightening time. But one cannot be brave unless fear is present. And now is the time to be brave.
Please join me today in remembering Americans who have lost their lives in the line of duty. And let us offer special remembrance of those we have lost to military-related coronavirus deaths.
