Navigating COVID Comfort Levels

With coronavirus cases again on the rise thanks to the delta variant, many workplaces are implementing easy ways for people to communicate which level of contact they feel most comfortable with.

For example, some organizations have adopted color-coded wristbands. Red wristbands mean that the wearer is still observing social distancing and prefers to interact with only masked individuals. Yellow may mean the wearer is OK with an elbow bump in greeting but still takes some covid precautions. Those wearing green wristbands feel comfortable hugging, shaking hands, and interacting up close.

It’s a helpful tool and also an important reminder that many people in our lives will have different comfort levels when it comes to COVID.

Here are some straightforward ways to check in with others. When meeting up with someone, consider asking the following questions:

  • What level of contact are you comfortable with?

  • Would you prefer that we wear masks?

It’s also important to set boundaries for yourself. Use clear and direct language when sharing what you are and aren’t comfortable with. For example:

  • I prefer meeting outside right now.

  • I’m still wearing a mask and would prefer that you wear one, as well.

As we navigate news days of the pandemic, we must extend each other grace, compassion, and respect.
